Profile

A professor in the University of Calgary’s Department of Art, Eric Cameron has taught for 48 years at the post-secondary level in universities on both sides of the Atlantic. While teaching at Leeds University from 1959-1969, he produced his “Process Paintings” and contributed reviews to the Arts Review and Yorkshire Post. Moving to Canada in 1969 as Chair of the Department of Fine Art at the University of Guelph, he soon adopted a variety of “conceptual” modes, of which his videotapes are the most significant residue. At Nova Scotia College of Art and Design from 1976 to 1987, he entered his most intensive period of critical writing for Artforum, Studio International, Parachute, Vanguard, Vie des Arts and Semiotica. Under the influence of the layer paintings of colleagues at NSCAD, he began the Thick Paintings, for which he is best-known, in 1979 and has continued working on them since taking up his present position at the University of Calgary in 1987. Theoretical writings include Bent Axis Approach (1984), Divine Comedy (1990), Squareness (1994) and English Roses (2001). His art has been shown widely in Canada and overseas and he is represented in museum collections across Canada. He was the recipient of the Victor Lynch-Staunton Award in 1994, of the Gershon Iskowitz Prize in the same year, of one of nine equal prizes at the Arts 2000 exhibition and of a Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2004.
