Welcome Heather and Trevor

Heather Leier has joined the Department of Art as assistant professor, specializing in print media. Prior to coming to the University of Calgary, Heather was an assistant professor of visual arts at Memorial University of Newfoundland Grenfell Campus. She completed her MFA in printmaking from the University of Alberta.

Through her arts-based research, Heather considers social constructions of life stages and contemporary modes of print media. The focus of her teaching is print media where she specializes in photomechanical processes, however Heather works across disciplines which allows her to teach in other areas such as three-dimensional practice.

Heather is looking forward to:

  • getting to know the campus community as well as the many contemporary arts organizations in the city;
  • opening a solo exhibition at the Ottawa School of Art;
  • traveling to Spain to install a site-specific series of prints and a curated portfolio as part of the IMPACT 10 conference.

Dr. Trevor Stark, PhD, has joined the Department of Art as assistant professor, specializing in modern art history. Trevor completed his PhD in the Department of History of Art and Architecture at Harvard University. Prior to coming to the University of Calgary, Trevor was a fellow at Columbia University and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.

Trevor's research focuses broadly on how the twentieth-century avant-garde movements confronted the status of art under capitalism, and his writing has appeared appeared in journals including OctoberTexte zur Kunst and Art History. He has recently completed his first book manuscript, titled Total Expansion of the Letter: Avant-Garde Art and Language after Mallarmé.

Trevor is looking forward to teaching art theory and modern art history in fall 2018. In his spare time, Trevor enjoys cooking and is working on his technique for making Chinese hand-pulled noodles.
